Yep, you read that right. Peaky Blinders: The King's Ransom is bringing 1920s Birmingham back to life in VR for an original story. Stars of the show Cillian Murphy and Paul Anderson are reprising their roles for the game to induct you into their gang.

What's more, a demo for the VR Peaky Blinders experience is available to download right now on Pico 4 and Meta Quest 2 so you can try out the game for free ahead of its full release date.

If you are eager to step into Tommy Shelby's VR world, which will be available on the Meta Quest 2, you will want to learn everything there is to know about it. Read on for details surrounding the Peaky Blinders VR game release date, pre-order information, gameplay and story details, and more.

Peaky Blinders VR game release date

The Peaky Blinders VR game will be released on 9th March 2023, developers Maze Theory have confirmed.

The release date was revealed in a Matrix-esque slow-mo trailer showing 1920s Birmingham as you've never seen it before.

In a statement, Maze Theory game director Tim Jones said: “The clock is ticking and the launch of Peaky Blinders’ TV series debut on VR is fast approaching.

“For fans of action-adventure and crime drama, Peaky Blinders: The King's Ransom allows players to explore the gritty streets of 1920s Birmingham in an authentic Peaky Blinders virtual reality experience inspired by the hit TV drama series. We think this new trailer will give players an exciting glimpse of what’s to come in March.”

Peaky Blinders: The King's Ransom was previously expected in 2022, the same year the show's final series aired, before receiving the new March 2023 date.

Can I pre-order Peaky Blinders: The King's Ransom?

You cannot pre-order Peaky Blinders: The King's Ransom yet, but now that this VR game has a release date, it is certainly possible that pre-orders will go live soon. We will keep our eyes peeled and update this very page when we learn more.

However, we do have a price, with Peaky Blinders: The King's Ransom set to launch with an RRP of £24.99.

Peaky Blinders VR game platforms

The Peaky Blinders: The King's Ransom platforms have now been confirmed, with the VR game set to launch on Meta Quest 2 and PICO 4.

We've tested both of those headsets ourselves and recommend them both heartily. We actually wrote a whole article recently to answer a popular question, is the Meta Quest 2 worth it? We decided that it is, if you were wondering.

There's been no mention of a Peaky Blinders release on other VR platforms, however, including the likes of HTC Vive or the upcoming PSVR 2. We'll let you know if that changes later.

Is there a Peaky Blinders VR game demo?

Yes, there is a Peaky Blinders VR game demo. The demo is available to download and play right now on the Pico 4 and Meta Quest 2 platforms. Check out a trailer for the demo below:

Peaky Blinders: The King's Ransom story

Peaky Blinders: The King's Ransom will be a narrative-driven game, with an original story written in collaboration with series creator Steven Knight and producer Caryn Mandabach Productions. We would expect nothing less than a strong story from Peaky Blinders, so look for a compelling plot – with some dashes of brutal violence, no doubt.

The title of the game, The King's Ransom, certainly implies that there will be a royal connection to the Peaky Blinders VR game story, but the specifics of that have not been confirmed just yet.

The developers have teased that the game's plot will see players on the run from the firing squad, before infiltrating "the Peaky Blinders underground world, coming face-to-face with much-loved and much-feared characters".

The game has also been described by official sources as "an authentic, embodied experience set in an atmospheric 1920s England. Players will choose their path in moments of subversion, wish fulfilment, narrative intrigue, and gripping set pieces, to see how the story will play out."

Peaky Blinders VR gameplay

The official announcement of the Peaky Blinders VR game has told fans to expect "Intense and Dramatic Action", "Reactive and Believable Characters" and an "Immersive Peaky Blinders World", which gives you something of an idea of what's in store on the gameplay front.

As they push through the Peaky Blinders VR game, players "must make meaningful and complex moral choices to earn their place in the Peaky Blinders, forming bonds with – and making allies of – Thomas and Arthur Shelby to take down rivals."

We've also been told that players will "get drawn into encounters that are engaging and believable as they navigate the dangerous and treacherous world of Peaky Blinders."

As for Peaky Blinders locations that will appear in the game, we're told that "iconic locations such as the Garrison Pub, Charlie’s Yard and Shelby’s Betting Shop" will all be recreated in VR. "With the world of Limehouse 1928 recreated with original spaces, there will be opportunities to unlock Easter eggs from the show, discover character histories and unveil a troubled past."

The Peaky Blinders VR game cast will feature new performances from Cillian Murphy as Tommy Shelby and Paul Anderson as Arthur Shelby, with the team from Maze Theory working with these actors from the show to bring their beloved characters into the digital realm. There will also be "a host of other brand-new characters".

Peaky Blinders TV producer Jamie Glazebrook said of the VR project: "Maze Theory has brought the world of Peaky Blinders to life in an entirely new way. Now you have the chance to walk the streets of Small Heath alongside the Shelby family. I can’t wait for the fans to experience this."

The developers Maze Theory previously brought us other TV-related games such Doctor Who: The Edge of Time (starring Jodie Whittaker), Doctor Who: The Lonely Assassins (starring Ingrid Oliver) and Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality (starring David Tennant), so they've certainly had plenty of practice with bringing BBC stars into the gaming world.
